Windsor is a lovely town. I have been several times, once to the castle, once to the theatre and once to watch the Triathlon! And as much as I love the theatre and running around, it is the castle that lives in my memory best and I didn’t even have the benefit of this wonderful opportunity to experience the special guided tour which is the highlight of our Royal Windsor Break.
The oldest and largest occupied castle in the world, Windsor’s story encompasses nearly 1,000 years of royal history. Discover how William the Conqueror’s wooden castle was rebuilt by Edward III as a stone fortress with magnificent apartments. Charles II set out to rival the Versailles of his cousin Louis XIV, transforming Windsor into what has been called ‘the most romantic castle,’ while George IV filled the rooms with outstanding works of art and gave the Castle its famous skyline.
As tours take place at the end of day visitors can soak up the atmosphere of the State Apartments in the evening light and enjoy world-famous masterpieces by Breughel, Holbein, Rubens and Van Dyck. The tour ends with a glass of champagne.
BOOK NOW for Royal Breaks at Windsor which include a 2 hour Guided Tour PLUS a copy of the official guidebook, a glass of champagne as well as your choice of accommodation.
N.B. Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House and St. George’s Chapel are not included in the tour.
By the way, if you are heading to Windsor with the family then maybe a trip to Legoland Windsor might be fun… OK it is not “Royal” but it is nearby!
* For anyone who cannot make our special private Royal Windsor Break on 04 September 2015, you can still enjoy the castle on one of our Royal Windsor Packages throughout the rest of the year – book now
